Default Ingres Online Documentation is Now Live

Hi everyone,

I'd like to take a moment to announce the launch of our newest website property refresh -- Ingres Online Documentation. The new docs.ingres.com is optimized for searchability both within the application and from the web (although this will take a few weeks to propagate). Documents have ratings and comment capabilities allowing our community to provide feedback on documents and share best practices & tips for other community members. Please check out the new online documents at the following URL:

Documentation | Home - Ingres

Thanks!

Very nice! It's much easier now to get direct URLs like this...
Documentation | Ingres 9.2 | SQL Reference Guide | Create Table Examples - Ingres
...that point to a single topic.
In the past, there was always just "docs.ingres.com" in the browser address line and it was very tricky to get "deep links".

Regards
Gerhard

It is a great move forward! Ingres documentation is great, but this may help further improvements.

However, I wish there was more space there, those adverts are taking too much space. I do not mind having them there, but then please make the content fill the width of the screen instead of having a fixed size...

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the new docs. I took a look at the VectorWise part. The Amazon documentation is new, I never saw this before, anywhere. I would propose to put the User Guide as the first item, and the Amazon documentation second, as it will be useful to far fewer people.

Then, when browsing (any part of this documentation) one sees a green square with aplus in it for sections that (presumably) have subsections. While these appear to be clickable, the effect of opening another level of detail in the left bar seem broken.

Did you check this? I have tested in Windoze both with IE8 and with Chrome.

best,

peter

Hi Peter,

The technical writing team is responsible for content -- I will pass your comments on to them.

Regarding the "+" sign -- it does expand the content when you click on it -- it just doesn't animate with an accordion motion as so many are accustomed. The documentation library has over 32,000 pages in it -- to have animated accordion expansion requires reading the entire TOC with each page load adding an expensive query where it is not necessary. I'm going to change the "+" sign soon as many have expressed confusion on this -- it was not intended to expand but rather indicate content below the current level.

Cheers,

Since I found this thread, I'll add some comments:
- there's no way to filter in search (e.g. only Ingres 10)
- one can't find words shorter than 4 letters - not only the results are empty, but there's also no warning. This is pretty bad, as a number of SQL functions are short, e.g. MAX, LOG, AVG etc
- concerning the plus - it doesn't expand for me when I click on it
- hierarchy on the left doesn't show it is hierarchy clearly enough (add indenting?)
- there's no index, very useful in the previous versions
- pages are a bit short at times

And a bug:
Documentation | Ingres 10.0 | Command Reference Guide | Using Ingres Commands - Ingres

On the left, I see all commands.

In the center, things end at 'optimizedb' for me.

80 is a nice round number, I agree
